Yoga for Kids

Perhaps because yoga is one of the oldest exercise disciplines in the world, it has always been associated with free spirit adults who want to be “one with world.”

Yoga is an exercise program that is based on the belief that the body, mind and spirit are connected and that through breathing and body movements, one can achieve tranquility and attain a higher level of consciousness. Yoga is frequently used to start off meditation sessions because the different yoga positions help people achieve balance both of the body and the mind as well teach people self-control and governance.

Yoga, however, has undergone a facelift and has begun to be seen as a modern exercise program that has both physical and emotional benefits. In fact, yoga has also been used to help children find balance in their lives and teach them discipline and control.

Below are some of the advantages that the yoga exercise program has for kids.
1. Children are also pressured. With numerous homeworks, tests, projects and presentation, they also feel the stress. Yoga provides instant relief from stress. The exercise program has been proven to effectively ease muscle tension and de-stress a person.

2. Children will also benefit much from the various yoga poses that they will be asked to do. The yoga poses are designed to help people develop better kinesthesia and body flexibility. The activity is even more recommended to children who want to get into dancing and gymnastics. Yoga will help them stretch their muscles and develop better flexibility and body coordination for their routines.

3. Yoga also instills discipline in children. Unknown to many, one of the key factors in yoga is self-control. By allowing children to work on their yoga poses everyday, much like any sport, they will learn to place discipline on themselves. This can be seen in the way they will work on their assignments or participate in class.

4. It is not easy doing yoga poses. It takes hard work and patience and a lot of tired muscles in order to perfect one pose. Children who practice yoga understand more the value of working steadily on a task. They know that if they persist and work hard, they will be able to get anything they want. Yoga will also teaches them to be patient and not to be frustrated when they cannot do something.

5. Yoga also builds self-confidence. Like participating in sports, yoga gives children a sense of identity and a sense of accomplishment after finishing each pose. Children who are yoga practitioners are more participatory in their classrooms. They are more independent and self-reliant than other kids.

6. Yoga provides endless health benefits. Although nothing has been concretely proven, yoga exercises have been said to aid in the reduction of asthma attacks. Because of constant physical activity, they are healthier and livelier.

7. Yoga helps children develop concentration. In today’s modern world, there are a lot of distractions that children face. There is the TV, the radio, the toys, the video games. Because of the rapid stimulation, most children nowadays have short attention span. Yoga can teach children to focus on things and not be distracted from their tasks. This will also develop their ability to reflect and to be self-aware especially in dealing with their emotions.
