Yoga Equipment

Almost 80 percent of all the known diseases are in some way stress related. Since the discipline of “yoga” is an effective stress-reducer, many people are taking up this ancient practice of relaxation.

To verify the effectiveness of yoga in reducing anxiety and stress, numerous research and studies have proven benefits of the practice. Some of the findings state that yoga can increase a person’s strength and can generate energy. Yoga also helps build your muscle while increasing your flexibility and posture. Yoga can also improve mental alertness by incorporating the importance of focus, memory, and concentration. As well as improving inner balance, practicing yoga can also reduce blood pressure, relieve pain, and improve digestion.

Starting off

To fully reap the benefits of yoga practice there is some equipment you can buy to help your practice.

1. The first thing to consider is the clothes you wear when doing yoga. Clothing should be comfortable. If you want to feel sexier, wear a shirt or top that is form-fitting. This is recommendable because many yoga positions involve the head down to your hips. When it comes to pants, you can wear any exercise pants and shorts as long as these are not made from lycra because it can cause you to slip in some poses.

2. Next to clothes are the yoga shoes. Although yoga is often done barefoot, you should at least have a comfy pair of shoes for after yoga sessions or classes.

3. The yoga mat is probably your one piece of equipment that is most important. Also known as the “sticky mat,” it is one of the staples yoga training. If you are attending a class in a gym or any yoga studio, the yoga mat helps identify you chosen space. Aside from the personal space the mat defines, it also ensures your safety and comfort when performing a series of yoga positions as it serves as a cushion on the hard floor.

The three things mentioned above, clothes, shoes and the yoga mat are the basic yoga equipment you’ll need to practice yoga. But there are other pieces of yoga equipment that are quite helpful to anyone practicing yoga.

One of the most popular sources of the optional yoga equipment is the Iyengar tradition. As defined, the Iyengar style yoga says that to be able to achieve the maximum benefit of yoga is by having the proper alignment in the positions. To be able to have proper alignment of poses, beginners must use props and other optional yoga equipment for their bodies to be used to doing different yoga styles. Often these optional props can be seen in yoga studios. These are provided because a yoga practitioner wouldn’t need to use it for a long time.

You might want to consider other optional yoga equipment for you to avoid possible injuries due to lack of preparation:

- Blankets. You can sit or lie on it during a yoga session.
- Blocks. These are good for standing positions because for you can be comfortable while improving your alignment.
- Straps. These are used for bound poses if you need to hold onto your feet but cannot reach them.
